Snohomish County Health Department

The Snohomish County Health Department Vital Records office handles Edmonds death certificates. The office is at 3020 Rucker Avenue, Suite 104, Everett, WA 98201. In-person hours run from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. On the first and third Thursdays of each month, the office opens at 9:30 a.m. instead. Arrive no later than 3:30 p.m. to begin the application process. In-person orders are available for pickup right away once the form is submitted and the fee is paid.

The office can issue death certificates for deaths that occurred in Edmonds from 1953 to the present, all deaths in Snohomish County from 1960 to the present, and all Washington State deaths filed electronically starting in 2016. For Edmonds deaths before 1953, the Washington State Department of Health is the correct source.

Effective January 1, 2021, Washington is a closed record state. Only qualified applicants with specific family or legal relationships can receive certified copies. Documentation of identity and relationship is required. No refunds are authorized under WAC 246-491-990. Missing documentation on mail orders must be corrected within 30 days or the application is denied per WAC 246-491-300. Kiosks in the lobby allow ordering birth certificates for oneself or a child only, at $25 per certificate plus a $3.50 kiosk fee. Online orders through VitalChek arrive in approximately 2 to 3 business days.

The index is in a table format showing last name, first name, other names including middle names and maiden names, date of birth, and date of death. The index spans from the late 1800s through the early 2000s and covers many of Edmonds's pioneer families and longtime residents. It is a finding aid, not a collection of full obituary text. Once you find an entry, you use the name and dates to locate the full obituary in archived newspapers.
