Chelan-Douglas Health District Vital Records

The Chelan-Douglas Health District serves Wenatchee residents for vital records needs. This is the local option for ordering death certificates, and it is particularly useful if you want same-day in-person service. The fee is $25 per certified or informational copy. An expedite fee of $10 applies for same-day service. If you want the certificate mailed, add $3 for regular mail or $9 for priority mail. Allow one to three weeks for mail delivery.

Business hours at the health district are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Same-day expedited service is not available on Fridays. Keep that in mind if you are planning a visit toward the end of the week. The district handles both certified and noncertified informational copies for events in Chelan and Douglas counties.

Under RCW 70.58A, effective January 1, 2021, certified death certificates are restricted to individuals with a direct and tangible interest in the record. That means immediate family members, legal representatives, or others who can show a qualifying need. Noncertified informational copies are open to anyone. They cost the same but include a watermark stating they are not valid for legal purposes.

Wenatchee is the county seat of Chelan County. Death certificates registered here are part of both the county and state systems. If the local health district cannot locate a record, they can point you to the state DOH, which holds the full range of Washington death records from 1907 onward.

The Washington DOH vital records page at doh.wa.gov gives Wenatchee residents an overview of state-level death certificate ordering, fees, and eligibility rules, which complement what the local Chelan-Douglas Health District offers.

The DOH page outlines what makes a certified copy different from an informational copy and explains when each type is appropriate for Wenatchee death record requests.

The Washington State Archives Digital Archives holds the Department of Health Death Index for the entire state, including Wenatchee and Chelan County. The index covers July 1, 1907, through 1960 and from 1965 through 2017. It has over 2.3 million statewide records and is open to anyone for free searching. You can look up deaths by name and narrow results to find Wenatchee-area records. For events in the past 25 years, only the index entry is available publicly. A formal paid request is needed for the full certificate.

Death certificates from July 1, 1907, through 1997 are also in the Digital Archives with viewable images for records more than 25 years old. If you are researching a Wenatchee resident who died in the early or mid 20th century, you may be able to access the full certificate image for free rather than placing a paid order through the DOH or the health district.

The period from 1961 to 1964 is a gap in the online digital index. Those records are on microfilm at the State Archives in Olympia. Contact the State Archives or the DOH if you need a Wenatchee death record from that specific window.

Note: Washington Digital Archives searches are free and do not require an account. You can run multiple searches without registering or paying a fee.

Historical Wenatchee Obituary and Death Records

For deaths in Wenatchee before July 1, 1907, records are held by the Chelan County Auditor. These early records were kept as hand-written ledger entries in county death registers. Most of those registers have been microfilmed and are available at the Washington State Library in Olympia and through the Washington Digital Archives online. If you are working on a family history that goes back to the early settlement period in the Wenatchee Valley, these pre-1907 county records may be the only official source.

The Washington State Library's Vital Records LibGuide explains where death records fall depending on the year. The guide confirms that the State Library holds microfilm of Chelan County death registers. Researchers can submit specific lookup requests through the Ask-A-Librarian service if they need help identifying whether a record exists before placing a formal paid request.

Wenatchee has been served by local newspapers since the late 1800s. Historical obituaries from the Wenatchee World and other area papers are part of the newspaper archives at local libraries. Many of these papers have been preserved on microfilm and some have been digitized. Obituary notices often contain information not found in official death certificates, including survivor lists, life histories, and memorial service details.

North Central Regional Library Genealogy Resources

The North Central Regional Library serves Wenatchee residents and provides access to local history and genealogy resources. The Wenatchee Library branch holds newspaper archives, obituary indexes, and reference materials covering deaths in the Wenatchee area. Staff there can help researchers locate specific obituary notices and identify which archives contain older Wenatchee-area newspapers. The library also offers free access to genealogy databases for cardholders.

Through North Central Regional Library, cardholders can access databases that include digitized newspaper archives and obituary indexes for the Wenatchee Valley. These platforms often contain death notices for Wenatchee residents that were published in regional papers during the 20th century. The library also holds local history materials including city directories that can help place an individual in Wenatchee before their death, which is useful when narrowing down which year to search.

Remote database access may be available for North Central Regional Library cardholders. Checking the library's website for current availability is the best way to confirm which genealogy databases can be used from home.

The DOH death record ordering page at doh.wa.gov provides step-by-step guidance for Wenatchee residents on how to request a death certificate from the state, in addition to what the local Chelan-Douglas Health District offers.
